A tough few weeks - assessing the pack chasing Huddersfield Town's fixtures ahead

Huddersfield Town are in a key part of their league campaign as they keep pushing to maintain their top six position for the long term.

Whilst international breaks often split the season up into mini-leagues Covid postponements have made that even more so this time. A key part of the Terriers' excellent momentum has been their fortune in being able to fulfill fixtures. Whilst many around them have one, two, or even more games to play, Town are one of only six clubs to have completed 32 fixtures.

We can debate the importance of games in hand over points on the board all day – no less a light than Sir Alex Ferguson was an advocate for having the points in the bag on your rivals for instance – but Town are where they are on merit and so far when teams have a chance to catch them results are falling the Terriers way.

Town have now been in the top six since Boxing Day barring matchday 27 when they slipped to seventh after a 1-1 draw with Swansea. They were straight back in with the midweek 2-0 win over Derby and currently have 50 points in the bag. For perspective they need two more to guarantee their best total in five years and whilst the promotion season’s 81 may be out of reach, their next best of 58 in the last decade is well within it.

So a very good, potentially excellent season is happening right now and we all should be enjoying it. And the race for the top six is very much a real thing. Fulham have first place all but sewn up already, Bournemouth have spent an amount of money that should see them second. Above Town Blackburn and QPR are surprising as many people as… well, Town are themselves.

Behind Carlos Corberan's men are a chasing pack though, some with games in hand, others with games against each other
