Man City's £50m transfer bonus continues PSR advantage over Premier League rivals

When Liam Delap leaves Manchester City for up to £20m this summer, it will continue a proud record of the City Football Academy in selling dozens of young players in recent years.

Last year, City's academy raised over £50m (with an extra £13m possible in add-ons), following from £47m the year before. The CFA is set to surpass those figures with Delap's deal to either Ipswich or Southampton.

Southampton have been responsible for over a third of the roughly £150m of sales, and will take that percentage higher if they beat Ipswich to Delap's signature.

They signed Taylor Harwood-Bellis this summer for a pre-agreed £20m, while Tommy Doyle joined Wolves for £5m in a similar deal. Delap's £20m will add to the £5m in a sell-on clause held on Douglas Luiz. Between those players, City have made more than £50m from players with just 21 appearances between them. In fact, Luiz never played a competitive game for the Blues.

The regular flow of millions coming into the City bank accounts from academy players is perhaps another reason for why their summer has been quiet so far.

Other clubs had to scramble to meet the June 30 deadline to satisfy the deadline for submitting Profit and Sustainability Rules accounts. Some swapped unproven young players for millions, others had to sell players quickly to avoid points deductions that befell Nottingham Forest and Everton last season.
