LIVE: Rush hour misery as railway lines blocked near Manchester - latest updates

Commuters are facing major disruption with railway lines blocked near Manchester.

National Rail says a points failure is causing issues between Manchester Piccadilly and Guide Bridge.

The issue is affecting several Northern and TransPennine Express services this morning (May 1).

It is expected to continue beyond rush hour, until at least 11am.

A National Rail spokesperson said: "There is a points failure between Manchester Piccadilly and Guide Bridge, blocking some lines.

"As a result, trains running between Manchester Piccadilly and Hadfield / Stalybridge / Rose Hill Marple may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised. Major disruption is expected until 10:00.

"Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Hadfield / Rose Hill Marple will be cancelled in both directions. Road transport has been requested to operate between Manchester Piccadilly and Hadfield / Rose Hill Marple."

They added: "Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Huddersfield / York may be cancelled, delayed or revised... Network Rail engineers are on site trying to rectify the issue."

Northen said on X at 9.30am: "Due to a points failure between Ashburys and New Mills Central some lines are blocked.

"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed."

National Rail has said services from Manchester Piccadilly to New Mills Central / Sheffield and from Sheffield / New Mills Central to Manchester Piccadilly have been affected.
