LIVE Air ambulance lands in Piccadilly Gardens after knife attack - latest updates
Emergency services have descended on Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre this afternoon (May 19) with police advising the public to avoid the area.
Videos from the scene show hundreds watching on as an air ambulance landed in the centre of the square opposite Blank Street.
We understand that the incident in question took place in Ancoats but Piccadilly Gardens was the most convenient place to land nearby.
A reporter and a photographer are at the scene.
This is a live event. You can follow updates on the blog below.
Here are some more photos from our photographer at the scene.
Our photographer Sean Hansford has captured some images of the scene earlier.
We understand that the air ambulance has left the scene, and that the injured man has been taken to hospital in a police-escorted ambulance.
Greater Manchester Police have given us the following statement:
We were called shortly today (Monday 19 May 2025) to a report of an injured man on Oldham Street at around 2.15pm.
The man – aged 31– appeared to have suffered stab injuries and has been taken to hospital to receive treatment.
No arrests have been made, but officers remain in the area to investigate to build a full timeline of events leading up to the man receiving his injuries.
We’d like to thank the public for their patience as Oldham Street has been cordoned off whilst officers remain in the area. Neighbourhood police officers are conducting additional patrols in the area to reassure local residents and those passing through the city centre.
If anyone witnessed this incident or has any information at all, please speak to us as soon as possible. Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital in helping us to complete our enquiries.
