A busy road in Heywood is shut this morning as fire crews respond to an 'incident'.

York Street in the centre of the town is currently shut off in both directions. It has been closed between Hartley Street to Green Lane since the early hours of this morning, according to traffic alert service Inrix.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have urged people to avoid the area. A post on X at around 5.25am said: "Firefighters are currently at the scene of an incident on York Street, Heywood.

"Please avoid the area as road closures are in place." The exact nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident this morning is near The White Lion pub on York Street.
