James Tavernier welcomes Rangers transfer refresh as skipper admits where they went wrong last year

James Tavernier has welcomed Rangers ' summer refresh but outlined where they need to improve this season.

After being part of a fairly settled squad over the last few years, Tavernier has seen some stalwarts leave and nine new faces come through the door as Michael Beale performs some major surgery on his squad in an attempt to challenge Celtic for the Premiership title after falling away badly last year as their rivals cleaned up domestically.

Danilo, Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, Jose Cifuentes, Kieran Dowell, Abdallah Sima, Jack Butland and Dujon Sterling will mean it's a new-look Gers that kick the campaign off against Kilmarnock on Saturday tea time. Leon Balogun brings a more familiar look, as tavernier is well acquainted with the Nigerian after his previous spell in Govan. And the skipper is excited after the biggest overhaul in personnel he's seen for quite some time.

"We've had most of them in throughout pre-season so the gaffer's got his message across," he said. "The lads who were here have helped him with that. It's a good changing room. They've settled in really quickly and they'll be massive for us this season.

"It's exciting. We've got new faces, new talent and plenty competition for places. It's really exciting times for us as a club and as a team. We now need to really push ourselves.

"It's football. People come and go. There's been a real big overhaul of players coming in and out. It's exciting to see the new players on show and the fans will be excited to see what they bring to the team."

Simply adding new players isn't enough though. Tavernier knows there's improvements to be made if the ultimate goal of silverware is to be achieved. He told Sky Sports: "We've got to win trophies. A club like
