James Tavernier reckons Rangers can spoil PSV 'revenge' mission with captain keen to strike Ibrox advantage

Jubilant James Tavernier has vowed Rangers are ready to spoil PSV Eindhoven’s Champions League revenge mission.

The Ibrox skipper was Michael Beale’s saviour in Switzerland as his second-half equaliser dumped out Servette and set up a £20million showdown with the Dutch giants. Tavernier was part of the Light Blues line-up which stunned the Eredivisie outfit this time last year to book a group-stage return. PSV, however, are desperate to even the score and made their intentions clear just seconds after completing their 7-2 aggregate drubbing of Sturm Graz, posting a tweet declaring it’s “time for revenge”.

But Tavernier insists Beale’s new-look side are ready to repeat the famous win masterminded by Gio van Bronckhorst 12 months ago. He said: “Obviously with what happened last year when we knocked them out then you can say they will be looking for revenge. We’ll do everything in our power to get into the group stage. It’s obviously a massive tie next Tuesday at Ibrox and we’ll be doing all we can to put ourselves in a really good position for the away leg.”

Tavernier got the all-important equaliser to seal a 1-1 draw and send Rangers through 3-2 on aggregate. Pouncing on a Borna Barisic cross, the right-back nodded home his 18th goal in European competition for the club.

And it means the 31-year-old needs just three more to overtake Ally McCoist and go second on the club’s all-time list of Uefa scorers. The skipper hasn’t quite hit his normal standards this season but Beale was delighted to see his skipper lead by example in Geneva.
