Hamilton Accies striker suffers injury setback

Hamilton striker Andy Winter has suffered an injury setback after discovering his foot fracture hasn’t healed as quickly as hoped.

Accies were expecting the 21-year-old, who has been out since August, to make the next step in his recovery this week but he has been told to keep his protective cast on for another three weeks.

Boss John Rankin said: “Andy has had a bit of bad news. His broken metatarsal hasn’t healed properly so he is going to be another three weeks in a moonboot, so that is a bit of a kick for him.

“He has been in a boot for six weeks and, usually, that’s you, you are able to come out of it and move about. But, after seeing a specialist, he has been told it needs longer.”

Rankin also offered an update on midfielder Marley Redfern, who had hoped to make his comeback in July.

Having been on the comeback trail after a hamstring issue in the SPFL Trust Trophy final win over Raith Rovers in March, Redfern suffered a setback when he injured his ankle and had been working towards a return in mid-July.

That failed to materialise and he hasn't kicked a ball in competitive action since May.

Rankin said: "Marley seems to get to a certain point and then gets a setback.

"Recently, he has been struggling with illness. He is running again and we hope he is fit enough for Reserve Cup game next week and we'll see what happens from there."
