Hibs hammering a setback for Hamilton Accies Women as boss felt side had turned a corner

Accies Women boss Robert Watson admits Sunday’s 8-1 hammering at Hibs is a big setback after feeling they had turned a corner in SWPL1.

Rock-bottom Accies picked up a point in a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Montrose last week, but they were brought back down to earth with a crushing defeat in the capital.

Hibs were 3-0 up at the break before Abbi McDonald got her first Accies goal shortly after half-time to reduce the deficit.

However, the Hibees were rampant and roared to victory, making it 4-1 and then netting three times in the space of four minutes late on to inflict Hamilton’s heaviest defeat this term.

It was a big blow for boss Watson after seeing his side put up better fights against title-chasing Rangers and Celtic in recent weeks.

He said: “Sunday was a backwards step, so we need to make sure it is a one-off and get back to doing the good things we have been doing.

”I do feel we were turning a bit of a corner after a tough start. We showed great fight at Spartans to come back from 2-0 down, we had a good performance against Rangers and we were disappointed not to win over Montrose, so that showed progress.

“We know that as a collective – as players and coaching staff – the Hibs game is not good enough. It is down to us to show it is a one off.

“It has been a difficult season so far but Sunday wasn’t representative of what we give as a team.

“The biggest frustration is we have played Rangers and Celtic – the teams who are putting the most money into things and have high levels of professionalism – and we have performed better in those games.

"We know Hibs are still a good team but I think even they would say they are not at the levels of Rangers and Celtic.
