Former referee explains why Casemiro was not sent off for Manchester United vs Luton

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has explained why Casemiro avoided a second yellow card in Manchester United's win over Luton Town.

Casemiro was awarded a yellow card by referee David Coote in the first half against the Hatters at Kenilworth Road. The booking came in the 34th minute following an accumulation of fouls by the United midfielder.

A few minutes later, Casemiro then made a tackle on Luton midfielder Ross Barkley. Coote awarded a free-kick against United, with several Luton players appealing for Casemiro to be given a second yellow card and be sent off.

However, Coote did not book Casemiro, with Erik ten Hag then deciding to substitute the Brazilian at half-time to be replaced by Scott McTominay. United won the game 2-1 thanks to a first-half brace from Rasmus Hojlund, which moved the club up to five points clear of the Premier League's top four in sixth place.

Gallagher has explained why Coote initially decided to hand Casemiro the first booking against Luton. The former Premier League referee then went on to say why he did not think the tackle by Casemiro on Barkley was worthy of a second yellow card.

"The yellow was for an accumulation; that was his fourth foul," Gallagher told Sky Sports.

"With the next tackle, A - I didn't think that was a yellow card and B - going back to what I said, the yellow was for four fouls. This is the first foul after it, so it's a matter for the referee and how he's totting it up.
