Fire erupts in basement of West Didsbury restaurant for second time in a year

A fire erupted in the basement of a West Didsbury restaurant for the second time in a year on Monday afternoon (February 19).

Fire crews descended on Burton Road and cordoned off the area outside the Great Kathmandu, a popular Nepalese Tandoori restaurant at the junction with Lapwing Lane, shortly after 4pm.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire broke out in the basement of the property, and spent a number of hours extinguishing the blaze and making the scene safe. Its cause has not yet been confirmed.

It is the second fire to break out in the basement at the restaurant in a year. Last February, crews once more attended the scene of a blaze that involved a tumble dryer.

Pictures taken on Monday afternoon showed three fire engines in attendance and an area of the pavement cordoned off as crews battled the flames using hose reels and ventilation fans.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just after 4pm on Monday 19 February, fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a commercial premises on Burton Road, West Didsbury.

“Three fire engines from Moss Side, Withington and Gorton were quickly mobilised to the fire, which had broken out in the basement of the property.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, used two hose reels, positive pressure ventilation fans, a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire and make the scene safe. GMFRS crews remain in attendance.”
