Why Ederson was not sent off for Man City vs Liverpool

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson was saved from a red card after making a genuine attempt for the ball during Liverpool's penalty incident.

City were on top before the break and had managed to silence the home fans when Kevin De Bruyne's neat corner picked out the run of John Stones to fire home from close range. The Blues could have doubled their lead when Erling Haaland's shot was saved and De Bruyne was just unable to meet a Kyle Walker cross.

These missed opportunities came back to bite Pep Guardiola's side just after the break. Darwin Nunez burst into the City box and Ederson came out to greet him.

However, the Brazilian was a fraction too late and wiped out the Liverpool forward for a clear penalty. Michael Oliver wasted little time handing Ederson a yellow card despite Virgil van Dijk's complaints that he should have been sent off.

But in the gantry, former Premier League referee Mike Dean explained why Ederson was saved from a red card. He told Sky Sports: "He's had a good attempt for the ball Ederson, he's just a fraction late.

"Obviously Nunez got there before, knocked it past him and he is committed for the ball and Ederson and hasn't got it. Clear yellow card."

Ederson's afternoon went from bad to worse from then onwards as he picked up an injury in the challenge with Nunez. Shortly after the spot kick was dispatched by Alexis Mac Allister, the Brazilian hobbled off to be replaced by German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
