Erik ten Hag needs to keep his Bayern Munich promise at Manchester United

Erik ten Hag must showcase an exciting brand of football to warrant a long-term future at Manchester United. Since arriving at Old Trafford in July 2022, the Dutchman has struggled to lift supporters from their seats, despite enjoying such an attack-minded approach at his previous clubs.

In 2012, he landed his first managerial position at the Go Ahead Eagles in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie. Against the odds, Ten Hag helped the club secure a place in the Dutch top flight after defeating FC Dordrecht, VVV-Venlo and FC Volendam in the promotion play-offs.

Then, in 2013, he was named the Bayern Munich Reserves head coach, where he worked closely with Pep Guardiola for a couple of years. During his two-year spell with the Bavarians, Ten Hag established a greater idea of his philosophy as a manager.

In an interview with German newspaper SZ back in April 2019, the Dutchman reflected on his time at Bayern. He said: " I watch Bayern play every weekend. Bayern have become my club. Since Pep [worked in Germany], football in Germany is different.

"I looked at almost every training back then, and I took a lot of methodical lessons on how to transfer his philosophy to the pitch. I want to have possession and hurt the opponent."

Then, speaking before United faced Bayern in the Champions League group stage last season, Ten Hag added: "I really enjoyed it there and my time in Munich was enormously valuable. I think a few people in the Netherlands were shocked when I signed as a reserve team coach for Bayern.
