'I'm American living in UK – this difference between northerners and southerners shocked me'

An American living in the UK reckons the cultural divide between northerners and southerners here is the reverse of what he's experienced stateside.

Kjordy, a TikTok user with a following of more than 191,000, shared his observations in a recent video, drawing a comparison between the "southern hospitality" and "northern rudeness" he knows in the US. In the UK, he believes this to be "completely switched".

He said: "Back home in the south, things are a lot slower, people are much nicer, there's more of a community feel to it - hence the term 'southern hospitality'. Whereas up north, people are much more rude and reserved, more fast paced, a lot more hustle and bustle - someone could be on the side of the road dying and people would walk by."

Conversely, Kjordy found British northerners to be "way more down to Earth" - especially in Manchester. He said: "I genuinely don't think I ran into one bad northerner. I remember I did a trip to Manchester, everyone was so polite."

He recalled how, when he visited a Poundland up north, the cashier initiated a friendly exchange, asking him if he was "alright" and engaging in a long conversation. "You never get that in London," he said.

He summarised his view of British southerners as being "a lot more reserved, a lot more distance". He continued: "Some people may even describe them as snobby. Their accents are a lot more posh, and they are a lot more rude. It's not common to have polite small talk with a southerner."

Kjordy highlighted London as a prime example. "In London, when you see someone, you don't really stop and say 'hey', you keep your eyes forward and just walk past them," he explained, adding, "London is the only place where I've seen people look through you!"
