Erik ten Hag is about to give Mason Mount something that convinced him to join Manchester United

It's hard to believe Mason Mount envisaged his first two Manchester United appearances being alongside an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old in midfield, but so far he has been the experience in that area - and by some distance.

Having missed England's June internationals through injury, Mount reported for pre-season training the moment his £60million move from Chelsea was confirmed. His Three Lions teammates were among 15 international Reds on holiday for another week or so.

And so when the 24-year-old made his first appearance for United, he did so alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Hannibal Mejbri, a pair who have made six competitive appearances for the club between them. That is not to say that the young pair couldn't cope - quite the opposite, actually.

In 45 minutes against Leeds and the same against Lyon, the pair were among the best performers on the pitch. Mainoo's quality at just 18 has been so good that Erik ten Hag has already informed him of his first-team place next season.

But when Mount decided to leave Chelsea and set his sights on United, he envisioned being part of a world-class midfield unit, with vast experience that he can absorb in his relative youth.

"You look at the players that are in midfield and it's vast experience of obviously winning major trophies, quality players and being able to kind of learn from them as well and bring my style to the team, so that's what it is all about," he said upon signing earlier this month.
