Dermot Gallagher delivers Alistair Johnston Celtic handball verdict as ref admits defender 'rode his luck' against Rangers

Dermot Gallagher reckons Alistair Johnston “rode his luck” against Rangers on Saturday but the former top ref says VAR official Willie Collum awarding a penalty for his alleged handball would have been overturned anyway due to Abdallah Sima being in an offside position in the build-up.

However, he does believe the Canadian was guilty and that on-field referee Nick Walsh should have been sent to the monitor even if it wouldn’t have stood. Gallagher also reckons Johnston was fortunate not to pick up a second yellow card in the Hoops' 2-1 win following an elbow on Sima after he had been booked early in the game for a foul on the same player.

There has been a storm of controversy over the Johnston handball incident with Rangers demanding the SFA release audio after Sky Sports showed an image of Sima in an offside position, leading to the belief that’s why the spot-kick hadn’t been awarded. However, it was because Collum didn’t deem it a penalty offence and Gallagher disagrees with that - but DOES think sharing audio as they do in England is a good idea.

Speaking on Sky Sports Ne’erday Ref Watch he said: “There’s a few issues. Alistair Johnston rode his luck on Saturday because he was fortunate not to give a penalty away and he could easily have been sent off later in the game but that’s the nature of the game. This incident was checked for a penalty. Willie Collum the VAR felt no penalty so therefore a goal kick was given.
