David Beckham's Manchester United takeover stance was 13 years in the making

Unlike his teammate and good friend Gary Neville, David Beckham has often taken a backseat when it has come to making comments on the Glazers' ownership of Manchester United.

While Neville has in recent years been forthright with his opposition to the American owners, Beckham's stance has often been non-committal. This is why it was a surprise on Friday when an interview with the Inter Miami co-owner was published where he declared it was time for the Glazers to leave the club.

Speaking to The Athletic, he said: "I think so (it's time for the Glazers to go). I think it’s purely because the fans want it. Once you lose the fans, especially at a club like Manchester United, it’s hard to get them back.

"Obviously, they [Glazers] have achieved a lot, and financially, the fact we’re even talking about the numbers of what Manchester United will sell for shows the success they’ve had. But there needs to be change. We’ve all seen that, we all know that."

Beckham's first foray with the 'Glazers Out' movement came 13 years ago when the midfielder was at Italian giants AC Milan. He had returned to Old Trafford in the Champions League round of 16 with the Reds holding a 3-2 advantage from the previous leg at the San Siro.

However, Beckham's Milan were blown away in Manchester as a Wayne Rooney brace, followed by goals from Park Ji-Sung and Darren Fletcher ended Rossoneri's run in Europe. As Beckham trudged off the pitch, he made a decision which led to headlines worldwide.
