Rasmus Hojlund transfer is about to give Gary Neville what he wants at Manchester United

With less than a fortnight to go until their Premier League opener, Manchester United's squad is beginning to take shape.

United, who returned to England earlier this week following the conclusion of their pre-season tour in the USA, are closing in on the signing of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund. The Reds agreed a fee with the Italian outfit over the weekend, understood to be worth £72million.

The club entered this summer's transfer window having prioritised the addition of a new striker and they are now on course to achieve that mission ahead of their season curtain-raiser against Wolves on August 14. Failure to fulfil such a mission would have resulted in United being forced into answering unwanted questions.

Though a lot of focus surrounding the impending arrival of Hojlund is on the amount of money United are investing in such an inexperienced striker, manager Erik ten Hag has earned the right to call the shots. He has taken a handful of gambles on the recruitment front since taking charge and most of them have come off.

United believe that Hojlund, who joined Atalanta from Austrian club Sturm Graz last summer, has the capabilities to thrive under Ten Hag's coaching methods. At just 20-years-old there is certainly time for him to develop into something special.

At the same time, however, there is no escaping the fact that Hojlund only scored ten goals in 34 appearances last term. He does not offer the guarantee of goals that Harry Kane would have done.
