Andre Onana provided perfect response to Gary Neville after Manchester United mistake vs RC Lens

Andre Onana endured a nightmare start to life at Old Trafford but the Manchester United goalkeeper will have earned Gary Neville's respect by the way he reacted.

The 27-year-old joined up with his new team in the United States after a £47.72million deal was agreed with Inter Milan. His impact was quickly felt in games against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, producing some fine saves and looking confident on the ball.

But his first taste of football at Old Trafford wasn't so smooth as he was embarrassed by a long-range lob from Florian Sotoca. The Lens forward picked up the ball inside the centre-cricle after Diogo Dalot's misplaced pass, spotting the United goalkeeper way off his line.

Despite the goal coming from Dalot's mistake, Onana has been at the centre of scrutiny for his part in the goal. And Neville knows how intense the magnifying glass can be on a Reds goalkeeper.

"It’s the single most difficult position in English football," he told The Overlap back in March. "The Manchester United goalkeeper comes under more scrutiny if they make a mistake than any other position in English football on the pitch. It’s tough and I’ve seen lads in that goal [struggle]. That’s the problem they’ve got.

"It’s whether [a new goalkeeper] can handle that stadium. I always think a Manchester United goalkeeper – or any goalkeeper – needs to have unbelievable concentration because you might go five minutes without touching the ball."
