Cambuslang Rangers fan has fond memories of 1974 Scottish Junior Cup win, 50 years on

Cambuslang Rangers mark the 50th anniversary of their Scottish Junior Cup triumph over Linlithgow Rose on Saturday.

The fifth and so far final time the club won the coveted trophy came after a 3-1 win over Rose at Hampden Park on Saturday, April 27, 1974 in front of a crowd of 22,830.

Remarkably, that was the last final Cambuslang featured in, despite having dominated the competition in the 1970s.

At their fourth attempt in the 1960s, Camby beat Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 1-0 to win the trophy for the second time, following their maiden victory in 1938, as they defeated Benburb 3-2.

Four consecutive finals followed, with a 2-1 win over Newtongrange Star in 1971, and a 3-1 win over Bonnyrigg Rose in 72.

A 1-0 defeat saw Irvine Meadow take the silverware in 1973, but Cambuslang regained the trophy in 1974, with a John Cummings double and a strike from Tommy Morrison.

Since then, Cambuslang Rangers haven’t gone further than the quarter-finals of the prestigious competition.

Cambuslang Rangers fan and author Andy Rae who wrote a book about the club called 'As Good as it Gets’ which covers seasons 1968-69 until 73-74, and describes himself as ‘an anorak’, has fond memories of the final.

The 61-year-old said: “It was brilliant, it was a Saturday, and the finals were always at Hampden – you practically had a season ticket for it back then, if you were a Cambuslang angers fan!

“My family all supported Cambuslang Rangers. My dad had three brothers, and the four of them went to all home and most of the away games, so I went with all of my cousins.

“There was a big team of us, and that was the dad and boy thing. It was fantastic, that was it.

“You saw the same people every week, a real community, and because it was local guys playing,
