Broxburn Athletic handed trip to the Highlands after Scottish Cup victory

Broxburn Athletic have been handed a trip to the Highlands after sealing their place in the Scottish Cup second round.

The Brox will make the long journey to face Deveronvale having dispatched their Highland League counterparts Nairn County in the first round at the weekend.

Athletic got revenge for exiting at the same stage to the same opposition three years ago as first half goals from Lewis Turner and Greg Page put them in control of the contest.

County reduced the arrears in the closing minutes to set up a frantic finale but the East of Scotland Premier Division leaders held on for the victory.

They got off to the perfect start when Turner fired them in front inside two minutes thanks to a fine header from a Ross Nimmo cross.

The two sides largely cancelled each other out for most of the first half with genuine chances being few and far between. County produced a smart move on 39 minutes which resulted in Ciaran Young’s shot being deflected over the bar with Fraser Dingwall heading over the resulting corner.

The hosts went up the other end and punished the visitors as Page’s free-kick from the edge of the box took a deflection beyond Dylan McLean to double their lead.

The away side started brightly after the break as they bid to get back into the tie with Connor Gethins going close from a free-kick while Young rattled the bar with an effort at the back post before Bob Watt produced a great save to deny Wayne MacIntosh.

He then fizzed an effort narrowly wide from distance as Athletic rode out the storm to keep hold of their two goal lead.

The Albyn Park side threatened themselves on a couple of occasions after a backs to the wall opening to the second half with Calum Heath’s header drifting wide while McLean did well
