Brendan Rodgers 'has the CV' for huge job after Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester City feats

Watford manager Roy Hodgson has backed Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers to be a future manager of the England national team, describing City as an ‘elite’ team.

The former England boss welcomes City to Vicarage Road on Sunday with Watford already having suffered relegation to the Championship. City go into the game looking to build on the midweek 3-0 win over Norwich City at the King Power Stadium.

That result lifted them up to tenth place in the table, but it’s still some way from the fifth-place finishes of the last two years. Another three points at the weekend could see City climb another place into ninth position, depending on Brighton’s result vs Leeds United.

Current England manager Gareth Southgate has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract with the FA. Ahead of his meeting with Rodgers, Hodgson has tipped the City boss as one of the managers who could be considered as a potential replacement should Southgate not extend.

“Yes, why not? The fact is he is a very good manager. His record is excellent and he has done it at big clubs,” Hodgson said. “Places where it is not easy to work.

“He did at Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester, taking over a team in recent years who have shown themselves to be among the elite. He has kept them elite and done extremely well.

“Why not? The fact is we are blessed in this country, there are a lot of good managers and good coaches. On the day when Gareth Southgate decides to call it a day or move on, I don’t think there will be any shortage of candidates for taking the job on.

“I certainly wouldn’t be one to dismiss Brendan’s chances in any way. Whether or not he would want to do it is another matter. But of course he has the capability and CV, so who knows?”
