Neeraj Chopra Attains No. 1 Spot In World Athletics Men's Javelin Ranking

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra became the world number one for the first time in his career in the latest men's javelin throw rankings issued by the World Athletics.

Chopra topped the charts with 1455 points, 22 ahead of Grenada's reigning world champion Anderson Peters (1433). Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic was third with 1416 points.

The 25-year-old Chopra rose to world number two on August 30 last year but was stuck behind Peters since then. In September last year, Neeraj Chopra won the Diamond League 2022 finals in Zurich, becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious trophy.

He won the title at the season-opening Doha Diamond League on May 5 with a throw of 88.67m. He will next compete at the FBK Games on June 4 in the Netherlands, followed by the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, on June 13.

India's ace athlete Neeraj Chopra has pulled out of Paavo Nurmi Games 2023 which are slated for June 13 in Finland. Paavo Nurmi Games is a Finnish athletics meet held annually in Turku since 1957. The competition is a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event. Neeraj Chopra had won a silver medal at Finland meet last year with what was then a national record throw of 89.30m. Neeraj also missed the end of the 2022 season due to an injury. Neeraj had announced last month that he will skip the FBK Games in the Netherlands due to a muscle strain he sustained during training last month.

Top Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar secured a creditable third place in the Paris Diamond League with a jump of 8.09m, his maiden top-three finish in the prestigious one-day meeting series. Sreeshankar also became the only third Indian to finish in top-three of a Diamond League after Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and former discus thrower Vikas Gowda. Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sreeshankar achieved his best jump of the day in his third attempt on Friday night.
