Woman in 70s rushed to hospital after being hit by taxi

A pensioner was rushed to hospital after being hit by a taxi in Middleton town centre.

Emergency crews were pictured on the scene of the crash on Burton Street, close to the McDonald's and Factory Street near Middleton Shopping Centre, at around lunchtime yesterday (Wednesday, October 2). The air ambulance also landed on a nearby field off Limetrees Road.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said a woman, aged in her 70s, was hit by a Toyota Prius as she crossed the road. The Manchester Evening News understands the vehicle was a taxi.

The woman suffered 'life-threatening injuries' and remains in hospital. The driver - a man in his 30s - was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by driving without due care and attention.

He remains in police custody for questioning. An investigation into the crash is now underway.

One man who witnessed the aftermath of the incident said it took place in an area reserved for disabled parking. He said officers could be seen questioning the man in the back of a police car, as the pensioner was being treated by paramedics as she lay on the floor.

Pictures from the scene showed an area of the shopping precinct cordoned off outside McDonald's restaurant and the Edgar Wood pub. Any witnesses, or anyone with information about or footage of the crash, should contact GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
