Woman taken to hospital after emergency services shut Cardiff city centre bridge

A bridge in Cardiff was closed as emergency services dealt with an incident. At around 9am this morning, two fire and rescue engines alongside a police vehicle were seen in Wood Street in the city centre.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was called to the scene at around 8.53am this morning following reports of a person requiring assistance in the area. Pedestrians were allowed to use the bridge, while it remained closed for vehicles.

Its statement added: "SWFRS received a call at approximately 08:53 to reports of a person requiring assistance on the riverbank at Wood Street, Cardiff. Crews, appliances and specialist rescue tenders from Cardiff Central and Barry attended the scene to assist the individual. The incident is still on-going."

At around 9.53am however, it was confirmed that all emergency services had left the scene and the bridge had been re-opened.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "South Wales Police were called just after 08:45am today (October 21) to reports of a body in the River Taff at the Wood Street Bridge. A woman has been taken to University Hospital of Wales with non-life threatening injuries and the road is now open."
