Wigan Athletic 0-2 Swansea City: Joel Piroe brace sinks Latics as resurgence continues

Joel Piroe struck a first-half brace as Swansea City continued their recent resurgence with a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

The Dutchman twice beat Ben Amos as Russell Martin's men ran the Latics ragged in the opening 45 at the DW Stadium, although the woodwork denied the forward what would have been his side's first league hat-trick since Guillem Bauza netted three against Leyton Orient in April 2008.

The second-half was far more even, although the damage had long been done as the Swans clinched a third win and a third clean sheet in four matches to ensure they have collected 10 of the last 12 points on offer.

Having selected the same starting 11 for his side's previous four matches, Martin freshened things up for the clash with the Championship's bottom side given the short turnaround from Friday's goalless draw with Coventry City.

Joe Allen, Jay Fulton, Joel Latibeaudiere and Jamie Paterson were all drafted in, with Liam Cullen, Liam Walsh, Luke Cundle and Harry Darling making way as the Swans looked to put an end to Wigan's five-match unbeaten run at home.

Despite their perilous league position, Shaun Maloney's troops showed confidence from the outset, with Nathan Wood doing well to clear James McClean's driven effort after a fine pass from Callum Lang.

But the Swans soon settled and created their first opening as Paterson - on his first league start since mid-December - found former Wigan man Fulton who threaded through to Piroe, although he could only drill wide.

He made no mistake on 14 minutes though as Paterson's deflected pass fell nicely to the Dutchman who coolly slotted beyond Amos from close range.
