Why Andre Onana is absent from Manchester United's squad against Arsenal

Andre Onana is absent from Manchester United's squad to play Arsenal in New Jersey because he's not ready to play yet.

Onana completed his 55m euro (£47.2m) move to United from Inter Milan on Thursday afternoon and he was introduced to his new teammates on Friday at Pingry School in New Jersey, where Erik ten Hag's side have been training.

United take on Arsenal at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday night and Ten Hag has named a strong starting line-up for the game, but Onana is not in the squad, which means Tom Heaton starts in between the sticks instead.

Onana has still travelled with the team and he took part in the pre-match warm-up but the club have said he's not ready to feature.

Elsewhere, Luke Shaw is set for his first appearance of pre-season, starting alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, whilst in midfield, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount have been selected.

Fernandes is also playing his first game of the pre-season schedule and he'll start behind Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony. Sancho has been used as a striker and he's expected to be in that role against Arsenal.

Ten Hag spoke to MUTV ahead of kick-off against Arsenal and said: "There is a fantastic ambience [tonight], it's a great stadium and we're really looking forward to playing. It's the first time the internationals are coming in [into the team].

"So they've had one big training in their legs. This is their first game, so we will see, as we have to integrate them. I think we can do better [levels in training]. We work hard but we have to step up, we want to raise the bar."
