What Bruno Fernandes said in his first training session as Manchester United captain

Bruno Fernandes is the new captain of Manchester United, officially taking the armband from Harry Maguire.

The Portuguese international captained United in 42 of their 63 matches last season and led the team out in both cup finals. Maguire's demotion to fifth-choice centre-back had made the decision inevitable for Erik ten Hag.

A club statement confirming Fernandes' new role said: "The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis.

"Fernandes has scored 64 goals and contributed 54 assists in just 185 games for the club since joining in 2020. As captain, the two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will continue to drive the highest standards throughout the squad as United push for success in the 2023/24 season and beyond."

United staff videoed their players coming out for training in the US, as is common practice on social media, and caught Fernandes jogging out for his first session since the announcement.

"Thank you guys, I knew you guys were waiting," Fernandes joked to the member of the media team. Casemiro, Luke Shaw, Tom Heaton, Victor Lindelof and Antony were all in the video.

Fernandes will captain United for the first time officially on Saturday night when they play Arsenal in the first instalment of their pre-season matches in the United States. Ten Hag's side will now step up their preparations having beaten Leeds United and Lyon earlier this month.
