What Mikel Arteta said to Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez after Arsenal fixture

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that he wished Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez 'good luck' for the forthcoming season after Saturday's friendly in New Jersey.

United made a winning start to their pre-season tour of the United States with a 2-0 triumph over their Premier League counterparts. First-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho sealed a relatively comfortable victory for Erik ten Hag's side.

The Dutchman named a starting line-up that was slightly stronger than the ones that had started against Leeds United and Lyon prior to the tour, welcoming some of the club's international contingent back into the fold. Raphael Varane and Martinez, for the third game running, started in the heart of the defence.

The Argentina international had been sidelined since April because of a season-ending injury and he has shown no signs of suffering any setbacks during this pre-season campaign so far. Like he was against Leeds and Lyon, though, he was taken off at the break along with all of United's other outfield players.

Prior to going off, Martinez, who enjoyed an excellent debut season at Old Trafford last term, was involved in a moment of controversy after a coming together with Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka. Some Gunners supporters were furious with his aggressive challenge and thought Arteta had challenged him on his actions at the full-time whistle.
