'I like players like that' - Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes opens up on Mason Mount relationship

When Mason Mount completed his move to Manchester United, the picture Bruno Fernandes used to welcome him on social media was one of them playing against each other, with a fistful of each other's shirt in the heat of the battle.

Fernandes was squaring up to Chelsea midfielder Mount during a game at Old Trafford as he tried to protect David de Gea. The United captain posted two images on added the caption 'What took you so long?' to Mount.

They might both fall into the category of creative midfielders but they also have a spiky edge, so it was almost inevitable they would clash at some point in their careers.

But now they are teammates after Mount's £55million move to Old Trafford from Chelsea and Fernandes can't wait to see the passion the 24-year-old brings on the pitch.

"We need players with that kind of aggression and passion, we need players to be like that in the games," said Fernandes.

"These are the kind of players that I like to play against and even more to have in my side so I am happy he is here now. And now instead of me on the side of David, it’s me on the side of Mason defending him from someone else. Now he is on my side and I will do everything I can to defend him."

Mount will bring that passion to United, but the England international has quality as well. Erik ten Hag has already spoken about the quality and intelligence of his pressing, something Fernandes also raised when speaking to the media on United's US tour.

The 28-year-old also expects Mount to bring creativity and another goal threat to the side but warned him the expectations at the club will be significant.
