'We need someone' - Paul Scholes fears problem position at Manchester United has been overlooked

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes the club need to sign another striker this summer, despite spending €42.5million on Joshua Zirkzee earlier in the window.

Rasmus Hojlund almost single-handedly shouldered the burden of scoring goals for United last season and many felt that responsibility was unfair for a 21-year-old.

Hojlund scored 16 goals in all competitions, a strong return for his debut campaign in England, but he faced challenging moments and his inexperience showed on occasions.

United decided signing another forward to support Hojlund was their priority this summer and a deal was agreed with Bologna to sign Zirkzee on a five-year contract. Zirkzee scored 11 goals in Serie A last term and is expected to play a back-up role to Hojlund in 2024/25.

Zirkzee can also play in other positions across the attacking line and at 23 years old, he's another relatively inexperienced addition to the United dressing room.

Scholes played at a LIV Golf event on Thursday and Sky Sports flagged him down for a brief chat. The United legend was asked which position he thinks the club need to strengthen in this summer window and said he would like a more experienced striker to arrive.

"I think centre-forward," said Scholes. "When I think of Man United, I think of brilliant centre-forwards. They had one young one with Rasmus Hojlund last year, who they had to rely on, which I think was a little bit unfair on him because he's a young player, still learning the game.
