'Too much' - Paul Scholes feels Manchester United have dodged £50m transfer bullet

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United have dodged a bullet by walking away from potentially signing Amadou Onana from Everton.

The 22-year-old had been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag keen to bolster his midfield to help ahead of another title push. However, Onana completed the £50million move to Aston Villa instead, putting pen-to-paper on a five-year deal.

He has big boots to fill following the exit of Douglas Luiz who was the long-standing maestro of the team before joining Juventus. The Belgium international, who is highly-rated, played every minute of their Euro 2024 campaign before they were knocked out to France in the round-of-16.

However, United legend Scholes believes Villa overpaid for Onana's services and was pleased to see his former club did not oblige to Everton's demands.

"He [Luiz] had to go for financial reasons and I think he'll be a big miss. I thought he was brilliant for them," Scholes said during The Overlap's latest fan debate. "Now it's who comes in to replace him?"

"I don't really see the Onana thing either. I didn't see it while he was at Everton, I didn't see it at Belgium either. When they said £50m for him I just thought: 'ooh, that sounds a little bit too much'.

"Look, [Unai] Emery being the manager that he is, he might get something out of him. It might be a club that suits him - I don't know. But, where I'm stood now, £50m for him just seems like a lot of money."
