Bayern Munich have proven Paul Scholes' Matthijs de Ligt Man United transfer theory wrong

Manchester United are on the verge of ticking off two more gaps in their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

MEN Sport reported on Saturday afternoon that a £42m offer had been accepted by Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt while Noussair Mazraoui is also close to joining for a fee of approximately £17m. Both players will add much-needed depth to a defence that is seriously depleted at present.

There is a general consensus that Mazraoui will be a good acquisition for the Reds considering his talent at right-back and his ability to cover on the left too. However, De Ligt's impending arrival has been met with a mixed response.

The most negative reaction to the news of the Dutchman's signing has come from Paul Scholes. On the most recent episode of The Overlap's Fan Debate, the 49-year-old shared his concern about De Ligt joining the United ranks.

"With Man United, we’re talking about players who can’t get into their team," he explained. "He’s [De Ligt] not playing for them [Bayern], that has to be a big concern, especially when Eric Dier is playing in front of him. That is a massive concern for me.

"When you’re bringing in players for £40m-£50m just because he’s played for him two or three years ago. Juventus got rid of him, he wasn’t good enough there and he obviously hasn’t been good enough at Bayern Munich.

"He’s coming to us almost like a second-rate defender." Unfortunately for Scholes, on this occasion his theory seems to be wide of the mark.
