Wayne Rooney tells Marcus Rashford how to reach next 'level' after Manchester United contract signed

Wayne Rooney has told Marcus Rashford he must bring major trophies to Old Trafford if he wants to take his Manchester United career to the next level.

Rashford put pen to paper on a new five-year contract on Tuesday, committing himself to United until 2028. The forward secured a £325,000-per-week deal after scoring a career-best 30 goals across all competitions last season, earning him the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.

The 25-year-old reportedly turned down a number of lucrative offers from teams in the Premier League and across Europe, cementing his place among the greats of recent years. But Rooney insists consistent silverware will be key to him being named in the same bracket as the world's best.

"I think Ten Hag has done really well since he came in last season," Rooney said ahead of managing the MLS All Stars against Arsenal. "You can see he's trying to create a squad and a mentality with the signings he made last season and also again, what they’re trying to do this year.

"I think Marcus Rashford is an incredible talent. I’m delighted he’s signed a new deal. The next five years for him are going to be really important in his legacy because he can score a lot of goals, but if he really wants to go to that level which Mbappe and Haaland are at then he has to be the man to get Manchester United back to winning trophies and league titles. I hope he can do that."
