"Unsung hero" - Journalist drops big Wolves verdict as Lage could lose £8.1m-rated "key figure"

Wolverhampton Wanderers would suffer a ‘big loss’ if defender Romain Saiss departed the club this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 32-year-old appears destined for the Molineux exit door as he approaches the end of his current contract following six successful years in English football.

According to the Daily Mail, Wolves offered Saiss a new deal in March after impressing manager Bruno Lage with his performances throughout 2021/22.

The report states that the Morocco international’s representatives were aiming for terms that would elevate their client into the top bracket of earners at the Midlands outfit.

It’s claimed that star striker Raul Jimenez and key midfielder Joao Moutinho are among those earning more than £100,000-per-week and Saiss wanted to be rewarded in a similar manner.

However, the centre-back now seems set to seek a new challenge after revelations made in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports.

When asked if his future had been decided, Saiss replied: ‘More or less’ and when pressed on whether that meant he would be staying with Wolves, he added: “No, more away than staying.”

Saiss has made over 200 appearances for Wolves across all competitions throughout his time at the club and O’Rourke believes he has been an ‘unsung hero’ in recent years.

The football reporter told GiveMeSport: “He would be a big loss for that side; he’s a bit of an unsung hero, I think, for Wolves, Romain Saiss, he just goes about his job.

“He’s always consistent and has been a key figure for them in helping establish themselves as a Premier League club as well.”
