Travellers warned of 'potential delays' if flying with budget airlines after September

British holidaymakers travelling to Europe this summer have been warned about potential 'delays and confusions' at the airport following a major shake-up to hand luggage rules. The EU Commission recently announced that all of its airports will be reverting back to old hand luggage rules from September 1.

Many airports across Europe have invested in state-of-the-art C3 scappers that would alliow the 100ml rule for liquids, gels and aerosols to be scrapped. But, recent checks found that the performance of explosive detection equipment 'did not meet the standard for which it had been approved'.

Airports across the UK made a U-Turn on its decision back in June in what was described as a 'temporoary measure' as Birmingham Live reports. But there has been no announcement as to when the planned rule changes will be allowed to go ahead.

EU officials said the move was a 'precautionary measure' and that it was 'collaborating closely with Member States and the European Civil Aviation Conference to develop swift technical solutions', however airport trade body ACI Europe warned that the decision would 'result in significant operational strain' at airports that have already set up the scanners.

Concerns have also been raised that the 'sudden' change will cause confusion and delays for passengers travelling this September, as many will arrive at the airport not knowing that the 100ml liquids limits have been reimposed.

Olivier Jankovec, ACI Europe's director general, said: “Security is non-negotiable, it is at the very
