Transfer question looms over Mason Mount with his Manchester United season a write-off

Mason Mount has played just 12 games all season due to an injury-ravaged campaign following his £55m switch from Chelsea last summer.

The 25-year-old has been out since November with a calf injury, having missed five games towards the start of the season due to a separate minor issue. Mount has been unable to build up consistency as a result, but onlookers were otherwise left underwhelmed by his time on the pitch.

During his 626 minutes in action for United, Mount has only managed to record one goal contribution - a single assist. The England international missed a number of good scoring opportunities before Christmas and while not terrible, he has neither provided a spark of excitement.

Mount will almost certainly miss out on Euro 2024 as a result of his frustrating season with there being no firm timescale on his return from injury. MEN Sport's Manchester United writers have given their thoughts on the situation Mount finds himself in.

Mount and United were always a mismatch. United needed a dynamic out-and-out central midfielder and instead bought a playmaker, one whose most impressive work is more off the ball than on it. That has been the case in his forgettable appearances for United. If they wanted a creative Englishman, they should have got James Maddison.

As minor as it may have seemed at the time, Mount's move was compounded by his inheriting the number seven shirt. That has cursed everyone bar Cristiano Ronaldo since he first vacated it in 2009. It is a number reserved for a player with a special skill set and Mount never fit the bill.
