Tottenham latest news: 'Real blow' for Spurs as Bruno Guimaraes joined Newcastle for £40m

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge insists that Tottenham Hotspur should have made a move to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon in the January transfer window.

The midfielder, who has been hailed as “very good” by French football expert Jonathan Johnson, ultimately joined Newcastle United for £40m in one of the more headline-grabbing moves of the month.

Antonio Conte’s side did move to sign a midfielder prior to the transfer deadline, as they secured the signing of Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus.

The Uruguay international has moved to north London, along with Dejan Kulusevski, who has moved to Spurs as well from the Italian club.

Spurs also had a number of players leave the club, with the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Bryan Gil and Dele Alli all heading away from the club.

Ndombele joined Lyon on an initial loan deal with the French club holding the option to buy him in the summer.

The French club have paid a £1.2m loan fee to secure his signature, per Sky Sports, and they can pay £54m to sign him permanently if they wish in the summer.

Guimaraes, of course, has moved to Newcastle from Lyon, and Bridge is confused as to why Spurs did not try to strike a swap deal that would have seen the Frenchman and the Brazilian swap places.

The 24-year-old has won three caps for his country and the Sky reporter is disappointed that he has not ended up in north London.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think he’s such a good player. I mean if Tanguy Ndombele is going to Lyon, why couldn’t Spurs have swapped? That’s a real blow for me, I really rate this player.”

He’s an excellent player who is likely to really improve Newcastle.
