The truth cannot be ignored with Ivan Toney transfer links to Manchester United this summer

Manchester United have spent €112.5million (£96.8m) on two players in this transfer window.

Joshua Zirkzee was the first new face through the door when he signed from Bologna last month and Leny Yoro came next, joining from Lille on a five-year contract.

United are financially restricted in this summer transfer window and must sell players to offset further incomings, as club sources have reiterated when discussing transfer activity.

Alvaro Fernandez was sold for €6m plus €3m in potential add-ons, Donny van de Beek finally left for a fee that could rise to €4.5million, Villarreal paid €11.5m for Willy Kambwala and Mason Greenwood has been sold to Marseille for €31.6m, sales which equate to £47m.

As things stand, United's net spend is around £50m and that's the figure that was touted ahead of the window opening, so it will be tricky for that number to significantly increase.

The summer budget was always expected to be around the £50m mark, which is why it's so important to get players such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Hannibal Mejbri (who are all in the final year of their contracts with no option to extend) and Facundo Pellistri off the books.

United made a strong start to the window in terms of selling players, but there's more work to be done and such deals will be necessary to further strengthen the squad.

After signing Zirkzee and Yoro, bringing in another midfielder was identified as the priority by United, but injuries to Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund have complicated matters.
