How Manuel Ugarte transfer can unlock Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United

Manchester United are looking to secure the signing of Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte before the summer transfer window closes on August 30.

Personal terms have been agreed with the Uruguayan for some time but agreeing a transfer fee with PSG for the midfielder has been a sticking point. Another potential obstacle is the future of Scott McTominay with Ugarte's arrival at Old Trafford said to be contingent on his departure.

But if a deal can be agreed for the 23-year-old, Erik ten Hag may have his most important summer signing. Ugarte's impact on Kobbie Mainoo's game may be transformative for the teenager and United's midfield.

Mainoo is widely regarded as a generational talent and one of the best players to come through United's academy in years. A 19-year-old doesn't get called up to the England squad at Euro 2024 unless they are a special talent.

However, despite enjoying a breakthrough season in 2023/24 in which Mainoo emerged as United's great saviour, one flaw emerged. The ageing and labouring Casemiro in midfield struggled badly in his second season at United.

The Brazilian's lack of mobility often saw huge gaps in midfield as the Reds were exposed repeatedly, leading to a huge number of shots on Andre Onana's goal. Only relegated Sheffield United conceded more shots in the Premier League last season.
