The Mancunian Way: 'Elon Musk is not welcome here'

In the unlikely event Elon Musk ever finds himself in Bury craving a takeaway, he probably should give Colorado’s Chicken a swerve. That’s because owner Amanji Ali has been left £12,000 out of pocket after taking on Tesla in a David and Goliath legal battle.

Mr Ali registered the trademark 'Tesla Chicken & Pizza' with a view to opening a new shop. But when the world’s most valuable car company got wind of it, they applied to invalidate the name, arguing it would take advantage of its reputation.

"It's a lot of money," said Mr Ali. "I just run a small takeaway. Tesla is owned by the richest man in the world. It's not easy to fight them. It's a small business versus a big business."

Inspired by inventor Nikola Tesla, Mr Ali initially applied for his trademark in May 2020. But Tesla’s lawyers argued a tweet sent by Musk in January 2018 made clear his ambitions to start up a restaurant franchise using the company's name.

It read: "Gonna put an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA."

Now the dust has settled on the bruising battle, Mr Ali is now hoping to open a second branch of Colorado's Chicken, but said Musk, who has $203bn fortune, would not be welcome.

He added: "If you asked me 'will you be inviting Elon Musk?'. No, I wouldn't. Hopefully I'm able to open my second branch before he opens his first."
