Man City could smash £100m mark for Champions League prize money this year

Manchester City will net over £100m in prize money if they are able to go all the way again in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola landed his first European triumph with the Blues last June in Istanbul and backed the club for more success ahead of the start of this season's knockout phase. City were too good for Copenhagen in Denmark and will bring home a 3-1 lead to the Etihad for the second leg that puts them as firm favourites to make the quarter-finals.

That win maintained City's 100 per cent record in the competition so far, and while there are no longer bonuses for individual games the club picked a maximum of six cash boosts for taking three points in all of their group games. Having already netted a few million for their Super Cup win over Sevilla, their total prize money if they were to go on and retain their crown would top the £100m mark for the first time; the final total would be around £104m, nearly £10m more than they achieved last season.

That is before broadcast money from the competition is taken into account, which is also lucrative. City started off with the biggest share from the English teams due to them entering as Premier League champions, and group stage exits for Newcastle and Manchester United mean that the Blues will claim more of the pot with each round they progress in; a run to the final would see City play 15 games compared to just 6 for Newcastle and United and anywhere between 8 and 15 for Arsenal.
