Gillingham replaced in the top seven of League 2 by Walsall ahead of the weekend trip to Salford City

Gillingham dropped back out of the play-off places after a busy night of action in League 2.

A win for the Gills on Saturday against Wrexham left the Gills inside the top seven but they have quickly been overtaken.

The battle for the play-off places is frantic with 16th place Bradford City just five points off those coveted positions.

Gillingham were knocked down to eighth by Walsall who claimed seventh spot in the table courtesy of a late winner at home to Accrington Stanley. Walsall have climbed from 16th to seventh inside a week.

In a division that continues to surprise, there was a win for bottom side Sutton United at play-off chasing Notts County - former Gills defender Ryan Jackson among the scorers in a 4-3 win for the strugglers.

Next to bottom Forest Green Rovers also picked up a point with a 1-1 draw against Wrexham, their goal coming from another former Gillingham player as Emmanuel Osadebe found the net.

The Gills return to action away at Salford this Saturday. Their weekend opponents drew 1-1 at home to Colchester United.

With League 2 throwing up so many surprises, Gills boss Stephen Clemence knows they just have to focus on themselves.

He said: “We have to take care of our own business and there’s a tally in mind and if we can get to that then we think that will give us a good chance but there are a lot of points still to play for.

“We’re going to have to be fully at it to get to where we want to be, there will be bumps in the road, I am sure, but we have to make sure that we keep concentrating on what we’re doing, stick together as a football club and try and get in there if we can.

“I think we have a great chance but there is a lot of hard work ahead of us.
