Brendan Rodgers tried to create a siege mentality in a bid to spark Celtic into life by claiming there had been a negative narrative around the champions from critics who he said were “ganging up” on the Parkhead side due to years of dominance.

He went on the attack immediately after the Scottish Cup win over St Mirren in Paisley and it continued before the weekend game against Kilmarnock. He admitted himself late last year: “It’s definitely hard to pinpoint the why but it’s definitely felt different. If it’s not quite ticking, then that’s really difficult for a club like Celtic, whether it’s to do with the manager, the board or whatever. We all want a successful, winning team on the field – and that will come from the support.”
