Susanna Reid close to tears as Good Morning Britain viewers heap praise on Roman Kemp for passionate plea

Susanna Reid appeared emotional as she spoke to Roman Kemp on Good Morning Britain about his recent plea to the Government to improve mental health support for young people. The Capital FM DJ himself began suffering from depression aged just 15.

The 30-year-old, who has hosted his own breakfast show on the radio station since 2017, has since become more vocal in campaigning about mental health after he lost his colleague and friend to suicide in August 2020, aged 31. As a result, in 2021, Roman presented a BBC Three documentary exploring the mental health crisis facing young men and revealed he had considered taking his own life after battling depression for more than a decade.

And last week, Roman aired his concerns to the government over their lack of action in a heartfelt letter he shared with his millions of followers on social media.

The letter read: "I really never thought I would be in a position whereby I would be writing this letter, but I can no longer sit and watch the current situation and confusion continue.

"There is a constant narrative around how young people should be "talking more". Big budget campaigns, political speeches and urges for us as a society to "talk more" only work if there is someone willing to provide the help.

"Suicide is about a loss of hope, and when someone expresses suicidal thoughts, that hope needs to be given back to them - it needs proper care and attention. Mental Health issues are at record highs in this country and unfortunately younger and younger children are reaching out for suicide support. It's time to treat this like the pandemic that it is."
