Stewartry lose 54-7 to Strathmore in first home game of 2024/25 season

Stewartry fell short in their first home game of the season, with Strathmore winning 54-7 to make it two wins from two as they climbed to the top of the National 4 table.

The opening exchanges made for a tight and heavily-contested first half hour of the game. The visitors scored after just five minutes of play but the score remained at 7-0 for a large period of the first 40 minutes until some fast hands led to their second of the day.

Ian McMorran, recently back from lengthy injury, powered over the line to grab one back for the home side and a successful conversion from Andrew Picken kept the Blacks in the fight.

The second half, however, was a very different story as Strathmore began to show their class. Mistakes and ill-discipline from Stewartry led to a number of chances for the Forfar side as they began to run away with the game.

Despite sustaining a number of injuries, Stewartry continued pushing to find a way back into the fixture but were halted by a rigorous away defence.

David Thomson’s side make the long trip up to Elgin this weekend to face Moray in round three of the league.

After two losses to open their campaign, they will be looking for a big performance to kick start their season in an attempt to match last year’s fourth-placed finish.
