"Statement of intent from the Leeds hierarchy" - Journalist raves over possible Elland Road deal

Leeds delivering Jesse Marsch the signing of Cody Gakpo would be a “real statement of intent”, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The American boss is in the process of searching for a Raphinha replacement – with the Brazilian set to leave Elland Road – and the PSV Eindhoven winger has been identified as a potential acquisition.

According to the Guardian, Chelsea are close to sealing a £55m deal for Raphinha, although Barcelona are also in the race for his signature, with the Nou Camp his number one destination.

Regardless, the wide man is expected to leave in some capacity, meaning Leeds will need to replace the 11 goals he scored in the Premier League last season.

According to Dutch outlet Dagblad, the Yorkshire giants are keen on bringing Gakpo to English football as they prepare for life after Raphinha.

The report states that Leeds are currently leading the race for the 23-year-old and while PSV don’t want to sell the flying winger, they would be willing to listen to offers of around £34m for their ace.

Meanwhile, Marsch’s side are prepared to invest much of the Raphinha money on Gakpo, in what O’Rourke believes would be a huge show of faith from chairman Andrea Radrizzani.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “If Leeds were able to get him from PSV Eindhoven, it would be a real statement of intent from the Leeds hierarchy that they are in there mixing with the biggest clubs to sign the best talent around.”
