Leeds: £34m star with 'huge potential' could 'replace Raphinha' at Elland Road

Leeds United target Cody Gakpo has all the attributes to replace Raphinha, believes journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The PSV Eindhoven winger has been linked with a switch to Elland Road as Raphinha moves closer to the exit door.

According to Voetbal International journalist Marco Timmer, Gakpo’s people have spoken to Leeds about a potential transfer for the 23-year-old this summer.

It is believed that PSV want €40m (around £34m) for Gakpo after his excellent 2021/22 campaign.

In the Eredivisie, the Dutchman scored 12 goals and conjured up 13 assists in 27 appearances to help his side finish just behind champions Ajax.

Bringing in someone like Gakpo is almost certain to be at the top of Jesse Marsch’s list, with the American set to lose Raphinha.

As per 90min, Barcelona have agreed to meet the Yorkshire club’s £60m asking price for the Brazil international.

Should Raphinha depart Elland Road as expected, O’Rourke thinks Gakpo is capable of succeeding the Barcelona target.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “I think he’s got all the attributes to maybe replace Raphinha. He’s young with huge potential and great figures in the Eredivisie with PSV with goals and assists, and that’s what the Leeds hierarchy will be looking to bring in to replace Raphinha because obviously he had a lot of goals and assists as well.

“So big boots to fill but someone like a Cody Gakpo could be somebody who could step into those.”

Based on his numbers from last season, you would have to say yes, while his overall skill set is probably another reason why Leeds are looking at him.
