"Would be a massive coup" – Journalist drops exciting Leeds verdict on £34m Netherlands star

Leeds winning the race to sign PSV ace Cody Gakpo would be a “huge coup” for the Elland Road side, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Jesse Marsch’s transfer window is beginning to take shape following a flurry of recent arrivals and the American manager is hoping to make Gakpo his latest addition.

According to Dutch journalist Marco Timmer, Leeds are keen on signing the Netherlands international this window, although they face stiff competition from several of their Premier League rivals.

The report states that Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have all spoken with Gakpo’s team, with Leicester the latest top-flight side to join the race for the 23-year-old’s services.

Gakpo, whose impressive form in Holland last season has caught the attention of English football, would cost Leeds £34m, which would require them to break the club record £26m they paid for Rodrigo two years ago.

Leeds are currently preparing for the imminent departure of Raphinha, who’s expected to join either Chelsea or Barcelona, and Gakpo’s attacking output in recent seasons could make him the perfect replacement.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “If Leeds were able to win the race for Gakpo, I think it would be a massive coup for them considering some of the biggest clubs in Europe have been linked. The likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United have all been mentioned with Gakpo in the not too distant past as well.”
