Some fans have shown Mason Mount the bad side of playing for Manchester United

Mason Mount made his debut for Manchester United this week and it was supposed to be a special moment for his family.

Instead, the player's brother felt compelled to respond to a provocative social media post from a mainstream media outlet about his performance and a very small minority of online supporters questioned why he was signed.

Mount would admit himself it wasn't a dream debut at Old Trafford, but the reactionary and hyperbolic takes about him on social media were laughable and further proof of why some views on Twitter should not be taken seriously.

The midfielder was ineffective against Wolves and he struggled in the No.8 role, but fair criticism and his analysis of his display boiled over into a few bizarre takes, with one fan account tweeting: "Does he still need time?."

That particular account has over 4,000 followers and encouragingly, the replies were flooded by level-headed supporters defending Mount, who was playing his first 90 minutes in a red shirt, not underwhelming for the umpteenth time.

If Mount wasn't aware of what it meant to play for the club, then he certainly is now. Those who represent the club are forced to deal with heightened scrutiny and lacklustre displays will attract attention.

There's been a widening chasm in the difference of opinion between match-going fans and online supporters over the last few years and although those who left Old Trafford on Monday night were disappointed, they weren't reactionary.

United still won the game 1-0, the most important part, but the opening day performance was underwhelming and Wolves understandably felt aggrieved to come away with nothing, especially after a late penalty
